Haygrove School in Bridgewater has recently described its pre-existing two-storey building as ‘inefficient, difficult to maintain, inaccessible and not able to provide the best environment for learning.’ With this in mind, drastic measures were put in place to redevelop the current building with a new and improved Modular build.

By opting for Modular construction it has allowed the project to be completed while the 1200 place school remained open, meaning disruption to the student’s education has been minimal and the project has been successfully delivered on time.

Volumetric modular building specialist Caledonian secured the project under Department for Education frameworks (DfE) and enlisted Wetherby’s recognised installers, Rendserve to assist with the works and installation.

Wetherby’s Modular façade system has been specially designed for application in factory controlled environments and with a flexible approach to finish options it meant the design would be able to reflect elements of the school’s history and complement the existing brickwork on the lower plinth of the old building.

The majority of the new building is of modular construction with the new components set to replace the main school building with new classrooms. One section of the building is of traditional steel-frame construction due to the ceiling height required for the larger school spaces such as the main hall. The modular sections will be three stories high including a school hall, dining hall, drama studio and a 500 place sixth form teaching area as well as sports facilities and all associated external works and pitches. The top floor will house eight purpose-built science labs and a prep-room.

Wetherby’s Modular Façade System utilised 180mm of Enhanced EPS insulation board for this project which provided superior strength and high impact resistance throughout. All this was completed at Caledonian’s factory in Newark and once safely delivered to site the addition of fire breaks were added in order to prevent the rapid spread of fire in concealed spaces. Wetherby’s Thin Coat Silicone Render was used to finish the building in shades 2502Y, 2020G90Y and 3030Y50R giving it an aesthetically pleasing and fresh new contemporary look.

The new building has created comfortable, light, airy, and environmentally friendly spaces along with effective energy efficiency throughout which will ultimately enhance the learning experience for all the teachers and pupils alike and provide better opportunities going forward.

Caledonian Modular chief executive Paul Lang said “Haygrove is a large project, which, alongside our other recent new business wins, underpin our future growth strategy. We have worked closely with the DfE and the schools, as we do on all our education projects, to deliver a modern, efficient teaching spaces that will open up further opportunities for young people in the area.”

Mrs Tracy Lee, Finance and Operations Director said “The new building represents an important new phase for our school with enhanced facilities for students and staff that will greatly benefit from teaching and learning”
