Doncaster high rise flats receive a makeover

Doncaster tenants and residents have seen their new look flats unveiled and this week it was the turn of Mayor of Doncaster Peter Davies and Doncaster MP Rosie Winterton to see for themselves the improvements made.

The flats in the town centre and Intake have received a £4.66 million makeover – not only giving them a new look but also making them more energy efficient.

Work carried out on the eight blocks of flats – Shaftesbury House, Lonsdale House and Westminster House in Intake, and Methley House, Hatfield House in Balby Bridge – has included new windows, doors, upgraded central heating and external cladding.

The improvement work has been carried out by St Leger Homes of Doncaster, on behalf of Doncaster Council. St Leger Homes has worked in partnership with contractors Henry Boot Construction on the Intake flats and Wates Living Space on the BalbyBridge high-rise.

The external cladding system, supplied by Wetherby Building Systems, consists of an insulating material that will reduce heat loss. It means the flats will lose less heat, making them more economical.

The work has been part funded by the Community Energy Saving Programme (CESP) – which is funded by the country’s energy companies. CESP has been set up by the government to help reduce carbon emissions from homes.

Mayor of Doncaster Peter Davies, said: “The flats have been transformed on the outside. When people are coming into Doncaster by train they can alsosee the transformation. I want to compliment the the contractors and their workforce for the efficient way the job has been completed to the satisfaction of the residents.”

Doncaster Central MP Rosie Winterton, said: “As well as transforming the look of the flats, these improvements have transformed people’s lives by providing them with a safer, cleaner and more energy-efficient standard of housing.”

Susan Jordan, chief executive of St Leger Homes of Doncaster, added: “The flats have been transformed but not only do they look excellent, the work is also making the homes more energy efficient. I hope our tenants are enjoying the improvements.”
