UK SME contractors urged to ‘up-skill or miss out’ on jobs

Following on from Green Deal’s official launch last month, small and medium sized construction businesses are being urged to research the skills and accreditations needed to work under the Green Deal and ECO, since those who are not adequately prepared or qualified could potentially miss out on some lucrative job opportunities.

CITB – Construction Skills published a report earlier this month which stated that there were 60,000 job losses and a 9% fall in construction output in 2012. Sadly, it seems unlikely that the situation will improve in 2013.

Up-skilling will be vital to the success of government initiatives such as the Green Deal and ECO since the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has suggested that the Green Deal alone could create up to 250,000 new jobs
within the next decade.

Chief Executive of CITB – Construction Skills, Mark Farrar, said:
“From today, Green Deal will enable households to access a raft of measures to make their homes more energy efficient… Only businesses with Green Deal certification will be able to work under the scheme’s banner so SMEs wanting to carry out this work must act now to gain the certification.”

Mark is also encouraging all SMEs to use the ‘Cut the Carbon’ web portal, which provides the latest up-to-date information on legislation, regulation and information, to help them prepare and qualify for work under the Green Deal, ECO and other efficiency schemes.

Wetherby Building Systems offer upskilling training their External Wall Insulation Systems from their training centres in Thurrock, Golborne & Wakefield.
