Wetherby Helps Steer Pilot Scheme into Energy Efficiency

The Tonbridge and Malling area has over 7000 properties managed by social landlord, Russet Homes.

Over 600 of these are Wimpy No-fines properties which give extremely poor thermal performance and residents have found their homes hard to heat and prone to condensation problems. With this in mind a pilot scheme was commissioned to insulate 39 of the properties to see just how effective external wall insulation could be.

Construction consultants Baily Garner specifically selected Wetherby Building Systems after detailed evaluations of a number of external wall insulation (EWI) systems. Wetherby played a considerable role in preparing specifications and U value calculations, finished samples, tenant awareness documentation and offered significant installer support for the scheme.

The Wetherby EWI system comprised of 80mm Kooltherm Phenolic insulation board, mechanically fixed to the existing substrate with a range of finishes including silicone texture, real brick slips and brick effect render. Residents involvement on teh scheme has been critical to the planning and delivery of the project and open days were set up for residents to have the opportunity to view the systems and be able to see for themselves how it would benefit them.

Anthony Cross, Operations Director for Russet said “Our priority is to tackle fuel poverty – EWI offered the best way forward. We’re delighted to have Wetherby & Anglian Home Improvements in place to undertake the project which has had an enthusiastic ‘thumbs up’ from residents”.

Since the scheme was a resounding success, the result will steer future strategy for addressing affordable warmth for the remaining stock of solid wall & non traditional properties.
