Rather than sending out the traditional stack of Christmas Cards to customers and suppliers, last year WBS gave a generous donation to Wigan & Leigh Hospice. This year, they have chosen to carry on this newfound tradition and support another local charity CANCER AND US, which is a cancer support group based at St Ann's Hospice in Little Hulton, Manchester.

CANCER AND US is a social group aimed at men and women who have been diagnosed or who are recovering from any form of cancer, but it's also open to friends and families of cancer sufferers that feel they need further support or information regarding this dreadful illness.

The group is self-run and as such relies 100% on charitable donations and voluntary assistance. At the moment the low level of funds available only permits the group to meet one evening a month, however with additional support, they are looking to increase the frequency of these meetings so that members may participate in a wide range of social pastimes including complementary therapies, day trips, social gatherings etc, which all go towards helping to make life a little bit more bearable when living with cancer.

WBS Marketing Director, Anne-Marie Armstrong, joined the group earlier this year following her father's diagnosis and consequent death from cancer. She comments, "Everyone is aware of Cancer Research and MacMillan Support and as such I'm sure they donate generously to these fantastic causes at local supermarkets and via subscriptions etc.

However, 'Cancer and Us' are a much smaller concern. They have no marketing budget and are wholly dependent on voluntary assistance and charitable donations to keep the group running.

In addition to WBS's 2009 very generous 'Christmas Card' donation, I have personally pledged to offer voluntary marketing and fundraising assistance on an ongoing basis to ensure that the group continues it's invaluable services to cancer sufferers within the local community.

For me, the best part of being involved with this particular group is the fact that I can look into the eyes of the people I am helping and see first hand the positive effects that group activities such as day trips & complimentary therapies have. These are real people with genuine needs - not just statistics. I couldn't wish to meet a more fantastic group of people".
